Artist Mikala Dwyer has created an interactive sculpture referencing the idea of motherhood and fertility. Egg Swing commemorates the history of the site of the old Royal Hospital for Women Hospital and invites the public to engage with the sculpture by swinging in the pink and red womb-like structure. The upright pole of Egg Swing is four metres high and is made of steel. The egg shaped seat for two is crafted from a foam epoxy/carbon fibre construction with a marine grade varnish finish.
Internationally acclaimed artist and 2003 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize winner Mikala Dwyer was commissioned to create an artwork that would commemorate the site but also be playful and interactive. Egg Swing is a beautiful and practical piece of art, designed to be enjoyed by the young, and the young at heart.
The Royal Hospital for Women (established in 1901) closed in 1997 and was later demolished for residential development. As part of the development agreement, a half hectare site fronting Glenmore Road was reserved as open space by Woollahra Council with the possibility to install of a piece of public art acknowledging the prior use of the site.
