This work is from of a series of six that Boyd created in 2018, depicting the mouth of a cave opening into daylight. In Untitled (DCPC 3), the cave’s entrance serves as an axis point to deeply layered histories. Within its darkened recesses, Plato’s allegory of the cave unfolds—a narrative in which a group of chained prisoners perceive reality only through the shadows of the outside world cast upon the cave’s interior walls. The hidden depths of the cave, like history itself, are illuminated solely by perceived light. Perception of reality, the limitless potential of light waves and dark matter, and stories borne in the shadows are subjects that permeate Boyd’s work, all of which contribute to the compelling nature of his practice.
